Massive Companies Bring High Speed Gaming Laptops to the Masses

Posted by admin in Technology Infos

Not so long a go it appeared like gaming laptop computers were only obtainable from select manufacturers and they were normally custom made. They were small volume sellers and high turnover producing items. They were the laptop computers you day dreamed about but were out of your reach. They the the newest technology and simply the best laptop computers. As badly as I desired one I couldn’t afford to buy laptop computers like them. These days things are a lot different with bigger manufacturers also releasing gaming notebooks.

These are definitely high margin notebook computers for the international brands and they know it. These days the standard notebook margins are really narrow so it presents the chance for them to regain the gross profits. With their gigantic marketing budgets I am certain they can persuade anybody to buy laptop computers like these. In my view this could extremely hurt littler laptop sellers if they don’t differentiate their unique proposition. This once premium technology is basically going to be targeted at everyone now. In addition the familiar brand name will give consumers more confidence.

The laptop computers being introduced by brand name manufacturers are all competing for the best laptop title. In my view however, this is actually a source of promise for the small companies in retail. I highly doubt people will prefer to have a similar spec like everybody in this kind of market. People of this kind are typically highly in the know concerning the technology at hand, and hence can carry out spec for spec comparisons. For certain purchasers specifications and benchmarks are more important than physical design. This would be viewed as a beneficial development for the buyer. The competition between the large companies should drive prices down when they seek to differentiate from each other. Even though I say that, I am not actually confident with my predictions. Whether laptop prices will come down overall is an additional topic but the best laptop computers are normally pricey. Although I still think outcomes will be good due to the saturating market, we’ll have to watch.

The Cisco Management Information Base (MIB)

The Cisco Management Information Base (MIB)

The Cisco Management Information Base (MIB) is an operating system component that’s included with every recent IOS distribution. Network administrators are able to manage and view device memory over the network Applications that deal with Cisco memory management have MIB as a crictical software prerequisite, and it’s used to report data to RME (Resource Manager Essentials) when other software is being installed onto a particular Cisco device.

Cisco devices all have several types of memory; processor memory, or RAM memory, Cisco flash memory cards, PCI memory, and shared memory which is also known as I/O memory. Not all Cisco memory will be evenly distributed depending on the device - some devices will have more processor memory, some more PCI, etc. There is a table in the MIB database which contains a number of entires, each linked with two variables, and each entry is meant to correspond with part of the pool of memory. The two MIB variables are ciscoMemoryPoolFree and ciscoMemoryPoolUsed. For ever pool, each is the complement of the other, and no matter what, adding them together will give the size of any pool of Cisco memory when given by RME. Then, all the totals can be added and the total amount of I/O memory can be determined.

If the software is an obsolete version of the IOS, only the size of processor memory can be reported and therefore don’t have more advanced bits. All versions of the Cisco Internetwork Operating System after version 11.1, which is used by the majority of Cisco routers and hardware (besides firewalls) can report MIB values over a network by using SNMP. This allows network administrators to query the database across the network regardless.

On all Cisco IOS devices, the Cisco Inventory application refers to the MIB when a device is imported into inventory. The Software Image Manager (SWIM) does this as well when it needs to verify that there’s enough shared memory available for all software images during upgrading.

There can be discrepancies between the methods by which different applications determine how much memory is available. This is because of how much IOS has changed along with Cisco. Individula applications have kept their legacy support even after upgrading, so Cisco recommends to customers to use the information that’s give by the Inventory program’s Detailed Device Report. This will be more accurate in determining memory. For those users with pre 11.1 versions of IOS, the output from the Show Version command would serve this purpose better.

What are birds

Posted by admin in Technology Infos

Birds are warm-blooded, bipedal egg-laying vertebrates that are characterized primarily by their physical features of feathers, forelimbs modified as wings, and hollow bones. Birds range largley in size from tiny hummingbirds all the way up to the huge Ostrich. Depending on how you look at it, and what your viewpoints are there are approximately ten thousand different species of living birds. Note the living. there are several others that have become extinct throughout human history. This mass in numbers makes birds the most diverse class of terrestrial vertebrates.

Birds are at the majority of times a very differentiated class, with some feeding on nectar, plants, seeds, insects, rodents, fish, carrion, or other birds. Most birds are diurnal, which means that they are active during the day. Some wild birds, such as owls and nightjars, are nocturnal or crepuscular which means that they are active during the night. Several birds will migrate long distances to take advantage of optimal habitats. With that aside there are others that will spend almost all their time at sea. Some birds have the ability to stay up in the air for days at a time, even sleeping while in the air.
All birds have similar characterists:
- Bony beak with no teeth
- Laying of hard-shelled eggs for reproduction
- high metabolic rate
- Light and strong skeleton

Most birds also share the common trait of flight however there are sevaral species of flightless birds, that exist mostly on islands. These are birds that once used to have the ability, but do to adaption have lsost it. A famous flightless bird is the kiwi which exists in New Zealand.

Protect Your Computer!

Posted by admin in Technology Infos

To start this article, a joke: Why did the programmers mix up Halloween and Christmas? Because 25 DEC = 31 OCT. Haha! Well… if you got that, you probably don’t need to read this article.

It is often said that there is no such things as 100% security. While that is true, it is no reason why you shouldn’t take all necessary precautions to prevent unauthorized access. In this article we will examine a few ways to protect your data.

Local Security

Out of all the different ways an intruder can access your computer, local access is the most promising way to circumvent your security. If a person has local access to a computer, it is only a matter of time before the data on the computer will be extracted.

However, protecting your computer against local attacks is also easy and only takes a few minutes. First, put a password on your BIOS configuration. Typically, it involves pressing Esc, Tab, F1, or some other key to access the BIOS configuration. From there, the configuration menu should have a tab about security. Open the tab about security and choose a decent password (there are hints about choosing a good password later on). Also, set the computer to boot up from the hard drive first, and do not let it try to boot from the A:\ drive or the CD-ROM drive. The reason why it shouldn’t attempt to read the A:\ or CD-ROM drive is that an intruder could use a CD-ROM bootable O.S. like Knoppix to steal your password, even though a BIOS password is set. Now save the changes and exit.

Now to set a password on your accounts on Windows operating systems:

For NT and XP users: Make sure your administrative account has a password on it. Also, put a password on any other accounts you have and disable the guest account.

For 95, 98, and ME users: The security offered on these platforms is insufficient for the protection of your data. The best option for these platforms would be to rely on other forms of protection, such as encryption.

Internet Security

The Internet opens up a host of security issues, but since the security problems are so prevalent there are many good solutions. We will now take a look at a few of them.

Firewalls:

Firewalls protect things called ports. Ports are what your computer uses to access the Internet. To view a webpage, for example, your computer connects to the website’s computer through port 80. Programs called Trojans can open ports on your computer and let people get into your computer and do whatever they want, including stealing passwords and credit cards. With a firewall, you can close most ports and protect your computer from Internet attacks. A firewall that I highly recommend is Zone Lab’s free firewall called ZoneAlarm. It can be found at Zone Lab’s website, http://www.zonelabs.com.

Anti-Virus software:

Ah… its name rings like poetry in my ear… but seriously, anti-virus software is seriously serious business. Seriously. No way around it, you need to be protected! Anti-virus software is not the be all end of computer security, nor was it meant to be. However, it is a major and powerful form of defense against viruses, trojans, and worms. Now let’s talk money… the universal language. Most anti-virus products cost money and a subscription cost… so check around for the best deals. However, the most prominent anti-virus software products are Norton Anti-virus (http://www.symantec.com/) and McAffee (http://www.mcafee.com). But for you people who can’t live without freebies, try AVG by Grisoft (http://www.grisoft.com/). The personal version is free… and awesome. Literally… no joke… free. Wow. Try them all and decide which one you like the best. After you have one, setup auto scan if it isn’t setup already. Okay, now you are ready! Concentrate, and become one with the force!

Spyware protection:

Spyware… that this stuff can just be plain nasty. These are the programs that discover information about you and send it to their evil masters. Beware! Danger, Will Robinson! Now, lets talk about ways to destroy them. People will have day-long arguments over which product to use, but the two main programs (both free!) are Spybot: Search and Destroy (cool name - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html) and Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/). Try them both, and see which one you like.

Now for the most powerful security tool… listen carefully… this is powerful! COMMON SENSE! Firewalls, anti-virus software, and spyware protection is useless against social engineering. Social engineering is conning a person into compromising their security. Now I know what you are saying, why would someone ever compromise their security because some stranger told them to do so!?!? It doesn’t make sense… but it happens. All the time. Think about some e-mail messages you might have gotten… “I Luuuuv you!” “Your pictures are inside!” “I saw your profile…” If a virus is attached, and you download it hoping to see something and you see something quite different, you have been the victim of social engineering. Most social engineering attacks are more powerful and dangerous, but you get the idea.

Checklist to protect yourself:

___ Set a bios password.

___ Change startup to hard disk.

___ Set password on user accounts.

___ Disable guest account.

___ Download and setup firewall.

___ Download and setup anti-virus software.

___ Download and setup spyware remover.

___ Use common sense!

Remember, security is not a destination, it is a journey.

Why Offshore Outsourcing Projects Fail

Posted by admin in Technology Infos

Misunderstood and Often Overlooked, Cultural Differences Can Make or Break a Project

Recent examples of failed offshore outsourcing have made headlines and become hotly debated among opponents and supporters of outsourcing. Typically, there are a number of contributing factors that cumulatively result in a project being abandoned or failing to meet its intended goals and objectives. Offshore outsourcing projects are no different and can fail for many of the same reasons, but offshore outsourcing projects are vulnerable to additional risks.

Santa Fe, NM (PRWEB) November 12, 2004 — Recent examples of failed offshore outsourcing have made headlines and become hotly debated among opponents and supporters of outsourcing. “Typically, there are a number of contributing factors that cumulatively result in a project being abandoned or failing to meet its intended goals and objectives. Offshore outsourcing projects are no different and can fail for many of the same reasons, but offshore outsourcing projects are vulnerable to additional risks” states Scott Noble of Global Sourcing Insights LLC, an outsourcing consulting and advisory company. He explains that these risks can include:

• Barriers to Communication - more than just language differences, special considerations must be made for methods of communication that bridge the geographical and cultural divide

• Complexity of Infrastructure - creating the ability for workers to access the tools they need is critical and there can be legal, regulatory, and other environmental impediments

• Division of Labor - avoiding simple labor rate arbitrage and truly deciding where specific types of work are most efficiently and effectively performed

• Cultural Factors - subtle and insidious, misunderstood or mismanaged cultural differences are often at the root of outsourcing failures

“In our experience, the most frequent unique causes of failed offshore-outsourced projects, beyond those causes that are typical to any project, are related to cultural elements that are commonly ignored or misunderstood” notes Mr. Noble. “You have to understand subtle cultural differences and how those will affect the way in which work is done - that comes with experience” states Ron Kreutzer, a partner at Global Sourcing Insights. “We have addressed some of these issues in our latest publication ‘Why Offshore Outsourcing Project Fail’ which is available on our website”.

Mr. Noble concludes “As companies skip around the globe in search of lower costs, they will find that those cost savings can be significantly diminished if they do not adequately address endemic cultural, business environment and social factors … preparation and experience are critical.”

About Global Sourcing Insights LLC Two senior managers of a large offshore outsourcing service provider formed Global Sourcing Insights in. The company advises organizations in using offshore outsourcing as a part of their business strategy. They provide application feasibility assessment services to quantitatively determine if IT applications are suitable for outsourcing and would benefit from using this strategy. Personal tracking devices in cell phones?

Posted by admin in Technology Infos

Cell phones have come a long way - regardless of whether you’re a business person or stay-at-home mom, having a cell phone with you is no longer a privilege - it’s a NECESSITY. In this modern technology age, the cell phone has progressed from being just your average communication device. The cell phone is now also a personal organizer, diary, calculator, timer, alarm clock, emailing device, faxing equipment, news reporter, etc.

In times of emergency, a cell phone can and will definitely prove to be a life-saver and 14-year-old Kelly Emerson can attest to that. Getting lost in a jungle is no fun for the teen. But thanks to her careful and wary mom, Kelly took a cell phone with her and when she got lost in the jungle, the cell phone she had with her saved her life. Within 3 hours, they found her hanging to her cell phone and praying. Wet, crying, hungry - but safe!

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently suggested that communication companies work harder to incorporate a location pinpointing device and technology on cell phones so that call receivers can check the location of the caller in times of emergency. For people like Kelly Emerson, the cell phone saved her life - but with an advancement of technology, the caller or owner of the cell phone may not even need to be awake or conscious in order for others to detect their location. Well, there are pros and cons to that kind of technology, and currently, this recommendation has come under fire and is under a lot of debate today. People are not keen on turning their cell phones into personal tracking devices because of very obvious reasons - it’s a form of intrusion into their personal lives. And instead of saving lives, cell phones with this ability may even become a threat. Let’s say, a murderous husband is trying to track down a runaway wife and is able to detect her location via her cell phone.

While individuals are quite confused about this new cell phone technology, large corporations are more than happy to welcome this new cell phone technological advancement. Imagine…with this personal tracking device installed into their customers’ cell phones, companies can locate the customers via their cell phones. If the customer is within the vicinity of their outlet, they can instantly send messages or make calls to that customer!

However, telecommunication companies are stumped on whether this new cell phone feature should be incorporated into future cell phones. Like the Internet, privacy is a huge problem. Personal information is big in the data-mining business, but so is privacy.

We’ll just have to see how far cell phone companies are willing to go to make their bucks!

Laptop Computer Brand That Seems To Be Doing Rather Good In The High Performance Laptops Segment

Posted by admin in Technology Infos

A laptop company called Rizeon, based in the UK seem to be getting some positive reviews on the net yet I had never even heard of them until crawling through the laptop forums. Their whole laptop range seems to be focused on the high end of the performance scale, featuring Intel core 2 duo processors and aimed towards enthusiasts and gamers. Purchasing a Rizeon laptop is not cheap. As they are all performance focused the starting prices are in the region of £659 up but after comparing some other laptops I think it’s fair to say they are some of the best value laptops around. Specification for specification they usually work out cheaper and they don’t even skimp on the quality of internal components.

According to their site they include brands like Seagate, Hitachi, Kingston, Corsair and Intel. They do pride themselves on providing reliable and high quality laptops. Rizeon’s website is rather easy to use and it’s good to see the large range of upgrade options on offer. I’m always more inclined to custom laptops because the mass market laptops you find in retail shops just lack performance components. I must say I’m very impressed on first impression. It’s refreshing to see that you can buy high spec notebook computers without having to pay the premium prices like when buying from the larger manufacturers. Sure there are other manufacturers doing similar things but they seem to be aiming at other niches or trying to battle with the big players in the industry which is usually a losing battle. You do get a lot of value for your money with Rizeon laptops check them out and see what they have on offer.

Computer Training - Building a PC, Piece By Piece

Posted by admin in Technology Infos

Building a computer from piece by piece is the best way to get the computer you really want, in addition to being an entertaining process. There are many different parts that make up a computer but it doesn’t take long to learn. Depending on what you will be using your computer for, the parts can be inexpensive or cost some serious dollars. People who are serious gamers are the ones who will most commonly need an extremely high-end computer setup. If you are not concerned as much with the gaming aspects but still want a great system, the building process can be much less expensive.

Usually starting out with purchasing the desired case is good idea, but you might want to decide on the motherboard first, this way you can make sure the case will be the right size to accommodate the motherboard. The most common types of motherboards are Advanced Technology Extended form factor, or “ATX”. These and micro-ATX are the most common sizes available. You can purchase an NLX style board if you want to use a slim desktop computer as well. Server motherboards can be very large and sometime require huge server cases. The Server motherboards can have multiple processors and a vast amount of memory, usually for business use. Decide if you want to use an Intel Processor or an AMD processor and then you will be most likely purchasing a motherboard with socket 939, 755, or 754. You are also going to need to get a power supply, so grab a name brand 450-watt power supply to be on the safe side.

Next on the list is the processor, which in most cases will be Intel or AMD these days. Both brands offer budget processors that don’t operate quite as well as the more expensive processors, but they get the job done. Intel offers the “Celeron D” on socket 775 and AMD offers the “Sempron” on socket 754. These two processors are cheap and will save you some money if you choose to use them. The Pentium 4 and the Athlon64 are the performance processors that cost much more money.

Moving on to the hard drive, the memory and the removable devices. Hard disk drives come in very large capacities now, but if you want speed over capacity, you might want to use a smaller hard drive. Serial ATA hard drives can obtain higher speeds than that of an IDE drive. SCSI drives are faster than both Serial ATA and IDE but you will need to buy a SCSI controller to use it. Brands such as Western Digital, Seagate and Maxtor offer drives varying in sizes from 20 to 500 gigabytes. Once decided, you might want to pick up at least 256 megabytes of RAM. 512 megabytes of DDR memory is recommended for the best operating experience with today’s advanced applications. “Double Data Rate” memory is available in different frequencies, but 400Mhz or higher will be fine. Removable devices such as the CD-ROM and the floppy drive are mostly optional. A CD-ROM device of some sorts is required, but other than that, it is all decided by what tasks you will be performing. If you want to be able to burn compact discs and Digital Versatile Discs, then you will need to purchase the proper writing devices.

Sound and Video cards will need to be purchased separately if they do not come equipped on the motherboard. A good sound card will run about 50 to 150 dollars, depending yet again on the tasks that will be performed. Cards strictly used for speakers will generally cost less. Video cards are extremely important for playing video games, more so than the processor. PCI-Express type video cards are the best choice for gaming while an inexpensive PCI-Express or AGP card will work fine for all other tasks.

Once you have all of your main components assembled and your computer can power up, all that is remaining are the other peripherals. You can grab the speakers, printers, mice and keyboards to better accommodate the system you will be using. Any monitor will do, but a more expensive LCD monitor would be a space saver. When the computer setup is complete you may realize it was much easier than you once thought.
