Catalytic Converter Fires: A Real Danger!

Posted by admin in On the Wheel

Driving down the street with the setting sun at his back, Bob Cummins navigated around parked cars and fire hydrants to find the right place to park. It just wasn’t something that was easy to do - finding a vacant spot - on his narrow, winding suburban street. Wedged between two business districts, Bob’s block was frequently filled with cars from outside the area, taking away from the already limited on street parking. While he knew he could simply pull into his own driveway and park, he also knew that he’d have to move vehicles around later when his wife, Susan, returned home with the kids.

Glancing out of his right mirror he noticed it and slammed on his breaks. A car pulled out of a spot down the street behind him and its driver pulled into a nearby driveway and exited the car. Bob slowly backed up halfway down the block and slipped his Volvo XC90 into the empty spot. A little tight, he thought, as he left just enough room between the driveway in front of him and the car behind him for his SUV. Within moments Bob left the comfort of his Volvo and stepped inside the foyer of his center hall colonial.

Less than ten minutes later the sounds of sirens filled the neighborhood. At first, Bob did not give it much thought, but as the sirens drew closer he decided to step outside to investigate. To his utter horror, a car just two houses down from his home was engulfed in flames. Within moments his worst fears were confirmed: his new Volvo XC90 was on fire! Minutes later the fire was extinguished but Bob’s SUV was destroyed.

An important part of your vehicle’s emission system is the catalytic converter. It is tasked with reducing harmful emissions that pollute the atmosphere and it has been a part of nearly every passenger vehicle built since the mid 1970s. Unfortunately, the catalytic converter can also run very hot and, at the same time, spark ignition of anything that it comes into contact with. In Bob’s case, it was his 2005 Volvo that was parked directly over a small leaf pile that started the fire that destroyed his XC90.

When parking your vehicle, take care to make sure that no debris is on the ground directly underneath your car. Even a small pile of dried out leaves can be just enough fodder for a fire. In the case of a high profile vehicle, such as the XC90, the clearance between the bottom of your vehicle and the ground is higher, meaning you many not notice anything underneath when backing into an empty parking space.

Hundreds of vehicle fires every year are attributed to motorists who park their cars over leaves; unfortunately this practice almost always results in the total loss of the vehicle due to excessive fire damage.

Play it safe when parking your car, truck, van, or SUV by examining the area underneath it to make sure that is completely free of all debris.

Guidelines In Buying Cars Online

Posted by admin in On the Wheel

The Web is a hassle free place to shop for cars. There are many advantages to shopping cars online. First, it greatly reduces the hassle of dealing with car dealers and salesmen. When buying a car online, you don’t have to listen to a dealer talk about the specs of a car. You just have to read all about it in a website. You don’t have to go to a showroom, you just to have to point and click your mouse and you could browse through different make and models of cars. And if you want to take a second look at a car it’s very easy.

The advantage of shopping for a car online is that all transactions can be done without you having to go out of your room. After ordering the car you want and paying the price, all you have to do is to wit for your brand new vehicle to be delivered to the nearest dealer. Some dealers would even deliver the car right at your doorstep (or garage for that matter).

There are basically two types of online car shopping website. One will only get you in touch with a real car seller. This means you have to transact the traditional way. Then there are websites that would take car of everything. Some websites would even deliver the car at your doorstep. Of course this would entail a bigger amount of service fee. And deliveries are made only to nearby areas.

But before you click and buy, you must first know exactly what kind of car you want. Determine the types of car you’re looking for and the price you are willing to pay for that car.

Below are some other tips on how to buy a car online.

1. The most important thing to do is to research. Don’t get too excited. Check on the different packages available.

2. Make sure that the Website you go to is secure and reliable. Most sites would let you browse by car type, by price range or both.

3. If you don’t want to make all transactions online then you could ask the dealer to meet you in person once you found him on the Internet. Upon meeting the dealer, negotiate with him as you would a normal car dealer and then sign the papers.

4. It’s not necessary to pin the model, year and male of the car you want to buy. Just a general picture would do. Determine how you will be using your new car and the reason why you are buying a car in the first place. Ask yourself what features are important to you. Do you give much ore importance to fuel efficiency than speed or vice versa? Are you more concerned about safety features than a good sound system? After you’ve done all these, it’s time to determine your budget. Just how much are you willing to spend for a vehicle?

5. Once you have decided on a brand and model car it would be prudent t6o check on the history of the particular car line. You can easily do this by consulting consumer magazines and websites. You could also check out the website of the cart’s manufacturer (e.g. Ford, Toyota, BMW, etc.)

6. If you cannot afford new models, there are websites hat sells used cars. Popular search engines usually have an automotive section so this is a good place to shop. If you don’t find one here you can try searching using the search string “used car.”

7. Check the background of the website of the online car dealer by clicking on the “about us” section of the site. It is advisable to buy only from websites which has detailed information about the vehicles they are selling. Ask if they have conducted inspections of each car in their lot through independent mechanics. If they have, then you’ll know that that website is a good place to shop for cars. Most manufacturers’ Web sites have detailed information on models, including available options, photos and MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price).

8. Read reviews about the different make, model and year of cars. A good website must also have reviews and ratings for the cars they are selling. But you should also cross check by visiting independent car sites or sites that do not sell cars or are connected to car companies to get a more objective review.

Nissan Buzz: Future Cars

Posted by admin in On the Wheel

Nissan Motors continues to make important strides in becoming one of the highest quality automakers on the scene in North America today. Long living in the shadow of Japanese stalwarts Honda and Toyota, Nissan is fighting back with a series of new or updated models to cut into the Honda-Toyota dominance. Can they succeed? You be the judge as we take a look at four coming attractions soon to make their appearance at a Nissan dealer near you!

Nissan Versa - Toyota’s Scion division has been a hit with the youth, while Nissan has been scrambling to provide models that can capture the interest of new drivers while being at the same time affordable. Scheduled for release by Summer 2006, the Versa will come with a 1.8L inline four cylinder engine and be available as either a five door hatchback or a four door sedan. The car will be manufactured in Mexico with a starting price in the neighborhood of 12 thousand dollars expected.

Nissan Cube - Still in the “maybe it will be imported” stage, the new Cube is Nissan’s response to the Scion xB and the Honda Element. Seating five to seven adults, the Cube is exactly that: a box on wheels. Published reports suggest that the Cube will be released to the North American market by 2008.

Nissan Sentra - A new Sentra is expected to bow during the second half of 2006 as a 2007 model. Significant styling changes and an up market push are planned by Nissan to help the car compete more effectively with the VW Golf and Mazda 3.

Nissan Altima - The big change coming for the Altima is the introduction of a hybrid engine. Scheduled to hit Nissan showrooms by Fall 2006, this new Altima model will actually borrow Toyota technology to create Nissan’s first hybrid. The engine and the battery will be all Nissan, however; Nissan apparently needs an assist from its Japanese rival to enter the growing hybrid segment.

Beyond 2008 consumers can expect to see an updated Quest van makes its appearance with subtle changes on the remaining vehicles in Nissan’s line up. Additional models are in the concept stage; expect some to be shown at upcoming auto shows.

Although it is too early to confirm each of the four featured models, Nissan’s thrust in the coming years is to increase its share of the Generation “Y” market. Should the Cube and Versa make their appearance as hoped for, Nissan is likely to score some points with young drivers in two areas: style and price. Look out Honda and look out Toyota!

Getting the Best Car Price When Buying a New Vehicle! Don’t Waste Your Hard Earned Money

Posted by admin in On the Wheel

In addition, by following these tips, you will find that the less scrupulous dealers, many times, will have automatically been eliminated from your list of dealerships before you come to the negotiation portion of a transaction.

First, you must determine a fair price to pay for the car that you want. You must procure the invoice pricing for the vehicle you’re interested in purchasing in order to determine a fair price. Look around online to locate a service that sells invoice pricing data. These pricing data packages offer valuable information such as current dealer inventories, as well as information about the deals that other buyers have secured. It is worth spending thirty or forty dollars for this information that can easily save you thousands on your next car purchase.

Secondly, do take advantage of not just one, but several of the car prices quoting services that are available on the internet. You will then be in contact with several dealerships. Use competition to your advantage. Talk with the dealerships that contact you. Ask them for a bottom line car price that includes all the dealership’s fees. If necessary, tell them that you are not interested in talking about financing, you are interested only in the bottom-line price of the car. Don’t be pulled into discussion about monthly payments. We will discus this later on.

Next, be sure to shop around for car financing. The dealership is certainly not the only place with which to get your new car financed! Find out what your FICO credit score is, as this will primarily dictate what interest rate you will be paying on the loan for your new car. Then it’s time to apply to several different lenders and see which one offers the best rates. There are many reputable online lenders that will finance even those with lower credit ratings.

If you will be trading in your used car, you should figure the trade-in and resale value of the car you are interested in selling. Basically, you will get more for your used car by selling it yourself, but trading in is simpler and easier. Another advantage to trading in your used car is that trade-in values lower the taxable amount of your new car. You will have to explore the numbers of your particular situation to determine which approach is best for you.

Last, but certainly not least, comes the negotiation portion of the car buying experience. In order to form a meaningful picture of a dealer’s offer, you should request a drive-away, cash car price that excludes the value trade-in vehicles, incentives and/or rebates. This simplifies matters, as many car dealers like to play around with these figures in order to confuse buyers and inflate their own profit.

Once you determine the starting car price from several dealers, it’s a simple matter of taking the lowest quoted car price and proceeding to inquire with the other dealers that you’re in contact with as to whether or not they can beat the price. Repeat this process until the dealers quotes stop getting lower.

Then it is time for negotiating the value of your trade-in car and decide whether or not to use dealer financing. Generally, you can find better rates through a third party lender, but if a dealer has a better rate, by all means, go with that. Be careful about dealing with dealers that don’t want you to finance your car purchase with another lender.

When it comes to handling dealer add-ons and fees, check over the paperwork and make sure the amounts match the figures you were quoted. In dealing with suspicious fees, don’t be afraid to stop negotiations long enough to do research on the individual fees.

Follow these steps and you’re sure to find satisfaction with your new car purchase.

High Fuel Costs; Does It Mean More Consolidation in the Trucking Industry

Posted by admin in On the Wheel

Whenever costs go up in the Transportation Industry, whether they be insurance, labor or fuel historically that signals more bankruptcies for Independents and more industry consolidation. So with Diesel Prices up over $.30 per gallon, as oil prices rush thru $70.00 per barrel will we see more of the same now in 2006? Perhaps and let’s flash back real quick to 2000 during the downturn in the economy and higher than normal fuel prices.

In 2000 Trucking Company Consolidators and Merger and Acquisition specialists were making their move to buy up companies and capture customers that as the lead pack is moving ahead. Fed Ex, UPS, Swift, J.B.Hunt, Yellow, were consolidating with cash on hand, great credit lines, an abundance of sellers and a specific strategy. We watched as New Truck Manufacturers had laid off one half of their employees. Banks reluctant to repo independents for fear they will be upside down in the loans if they tried to sell when every used truck dealer in America was over stocked by 300 percent and sales were down by 45 percent. Fuel costs and over regulation, such as the OSHA rules, DOT rules, over taxation by states on fuel, too much road construction because of surpluses of state income taxes slowing traffic, hours rules, etc. were the cause. The Industry felt the affects.

Now most independent trucking companies are competing against companies with thin margins as they are on major razor thin margins themselves. Needless to say trucking sure is not what it once was. Is the industry going to find more consolidation with the higher fuel prices as the War in Iran heats up or the Hurricane Season gets going? Are we going to see the commodity analysts $85.00 per barrel predictions and almost $4.00 per gallon diesel prices? Some are worried and others see this as a buying opportunity in the making. Consider all this in 2006.
