How to Excel at Career Fairs

Posted by admin in Ads, Living With Marketing, Web Commerce

Standing out at a Career Faire can make a difference in your search. Career Faires are starting to pick up, and a major job search company is running some nice ones, called Targeted Job Fairs. At a Silicon Valley Job Faire in early 2010, 10 companies as showing up, and Dice has 82 job fairs scheduled for 2010 across the US.

How do you compete at a Job Faire? The competition can be noteworthy, but you can help yourself stick out from the gang with early planning. At AA-Careers, we have a straight-forward 6-step process to get ready. Plan to go? Here’s how to prepare:

First, investigate the companies that are going and pick your targets. Use the World Wide Web to research the organizations that are there beforehand. Go to their web sites and see if they have their openings listed. Pick a limited number to go after, and get ready to spend up to an hour researching each one. It’s hard to do more than 8 in a day, and three or four is a much more reasonable target. For each company, you want to know: recent news, key product lines, and exectuve names. Try to see if you know anyone at the target companies. You’ll end up with a page or two of research for each company/job.

Second, if there are job postings on the web, read them to see what the hiring manager is looking for. Create a mapping of your achievements and skills to the requirements of the job. Make the terminology match. If the hiring company calls customers "clients", your resume should do the same thing. The accomplishments should be written in the style of the hiring company.

Third, create a ‘brief sales pitch’ for each potential company/position combination. Write down a ninety second ‘thumbnail’ that you can repeat verbally describing why you are a special candidate for that job. You’ll use this in your resume and when you meet the company at the job stall.

Fourth, modify your resume for each position. The objective on your resume should exactly match the position you’re want. The executive summary should be a written form of your “mini sales pitch” for the job. Then choose the achievements and skills that most clearly match the job requirements. Especially at a Job Faire, the purpose of your resume is a sales tool for you – to get you on-site job interviews. It should be simple to see that you’re a match based on your resume.

Fifth, practice your ‘mini-sales-pitch’. Collect your research and the resume for each position - bring a couple of copies for each – and put each in a clearly tagged folder. Keep them in a lightweight briefcase or folio.

Finally, dress and prepare as if you’re doing on-site interviews. Dress nicely and be properly groomed. Avoid strong cologne or perfume…use any eau de cologne or fragrance sparingly, if at all.

Remember to smile, and good hunting!

Looking for a Job Using the Web to Succeed

Posted by admin in Ads, Living With Marketing, Web Commerce

The Internet offers huge opportunities for a job seeker, but also presents several potential challenges. It also adds great complexities, and a lot more matters to consider…and be careful of.

Job search needs to be thought of as a personal, extremely targeted marketing operation where you are the product. Your resume is an advertisement. Your extended network of colleagues is your inside source for information and job leads.

So where does the internet fit in? At AA-Careers, we recently posted a job on Craigslist and got over 600 responses in a calendar week. For one position. That’s increased job hunting competition.

Had the right person gotten ahold of us before we placed the ad, they could have gotten the job before running in to all that competition. How? By finding someone who knows someone at our office who became aware of the job prior to posting. Everyone was aware of the job for at least 14 days before it was posted. Who in your network might know of a job that’s coming available soon?

Be careful how you submit your application as well. When we did an analysis of the 650 resumes, we found a large number of errors. 63% of the applicants were easily taken out with a speedy triage process. How? The same way any employer would. By passing over resumes where the objective didn’t match our job. By rejecting prospects whose cover letters gave us grounds not to employ them, like "I know I’m overqualified but I really need a job". By eliminating candidates whose documents that didn’t open properly. And by eliminating prospects who didn’t trouble to spell check their cover letter and/or resume.

So the great news is that job sites give you a feel of what companies are hiring, and for what kinds of positions. But once those positions are posted, the competition is intense. You can still try, if you have a well honed resume, designed to appeal directly and clearly to the recruiter. And if you have practiced interviewing – so you don’t stumble at a critical point.

Another issue to be aware of is how quickly you can be checked on on the internet. As we Googled several candidates, we ran into some Facebook comments that were in questionable taste. Nothing insane, but enough to sway our thinking about who to employ.

AA-Careers provides a all-inclusive set of services for Bay Area job seekers, providing our clients a personal career consultant, a managed job hunting campaign, modern tools like a personal website, video, highly targeted resume, and much more. Let us know if we can help you.

Be careful out there, and good hunting!

Outsourcing Voice over Production Is a Smart Decision

Whether the audio was not audible enough in the original shot, or the character has an inner monologue, voice over production is a priceless part of television, radio and movies. From radio jingles to big budget movies, the quality of the voice over production can set the spirit for the overall experience of the project. Just as the voice over work of old martial arts movies was laughable, any commercial or movie will not be taken seriously with poor voice over production quality. But even if your budget is extra small, you can still receive top of the line voice over production to fit your price range without having to resort to a cheap microphone and a laptop.

Indifferent of your wallet, you should consider EdgeStudio.com if you are in the need for voice over production. EdgeStudio.com provides genre-specific directors, engineers, and casting professionals, who offer guidance and in-house production. This is not something that can be achieved with a laptop and a microphone. Although you may need to cut back on expenditure by keeping the production costs to a minimum and producing the voiceover track within your home office, the value would truly be less than desirable in relation to the value, experience and knowledge you would receive by outsourcing to a pro voice over production studio. Thousands, even millions of people are likely to hear the voice over track. Make sure that the audience is hearing the tone and quality you intended to convey by letting the professionals handle your voice over project.

The centre is all set to be completed in the near future as the steelwork frame has already been built.

The new hub has provided Pegler with opportunities to consolidate its other warehouses that are located in Doncaster and Barnsley by early 2010. Office Rental Double Edged Sword in Liverpool

Posted by admin in Ads, Consumers, Money Making

The worldwide and national economic downturn seems to be something of a double edged sword for office rentals in the Merseyside area. Liverpool office rentals are suffering a massive decline even in comparison to last year’s lack lustre office rental market.

Occupied office space in the city has dropped by over a third making it difficult for many rental office buildings to turn a profit. Well over three quarters of a million square feet of office space was taken up for the 2007 financial year, for 2008 that had dropped to around half a million square feet, representing a tsunami of empty offices dotted throughout the city.

And anecdotal evidence points out that it looks as though things are possibly getting words for the first quarter of 2009. Of course the more office space becomes available the more difficult it is to generate viable rentals from any new occupants that may be willing to take up office space.

As with other cities across the country the decline in rentals is even affecting some areas and even specific buildings to a different degree than others. The main business district in central Liverpool is doing reasonably well in fact they even managed to show a slight improvement in the first part of 2009 over 2008. The need for desk space in Liverpool is also in rising in demand as the popularity of desk space rental catches on.

Other less popular locations are not faring so well and an average downturn always means that some buildings are fully occupied whereas others may be suffering from a chronic availability of square footage.

As with all bad news there is a silver lining in that this is decline in rental values combined with a glut of available space is enticing some companies to consider Liverpool as a viable relocation point with some large scale office rentals having been taken up over the last few months most notably the Maersk companies decision to move its headquarters within the city boundaries.
