Frugal Cooking With Herbs

Posted by admin in Eatery

Herbs are fun to grow and easy to use. Herbs can
be a frugal cook’s best friend because they can
enhance even the simplest fare making it seem
grand! Herbs are easy to grow–you can even grow
them on your kitchen windowsill.

The addition of herbs can change completely the
flavor of foods-from homemade breads to soups,
stews and vegetables. And they can add variety
and excitement to your diet.

A beginner should use herbs with care, adding a little
at a time and adjusting to your own taste. Each herb
has its own individual flavor and certain herbs also
have well-known associations with particular foods.
Basil is often paired with tomatoes, rosemary with
lamb, chives with cream cheese and cottage cheese.

Fresh herbs are wonderful as garnishes. Herb vinegars
can be used in salad dressings, soups and marinades.
You can also add fresh herbs to mayonnaise or butter
for a different flavor.

Fresh herbs will keep in the refrigerator for several
days. A good way to freeze herbs such as basil, oregano,
and dill is to chop, place in ice cube trays, cover with
water and freeze. Then just add to stews and sauces
when needed.

Some easy herbs to grow are lemon balm, rosemary, oregano,
dill, basil, parsley, peppermint, lavendar, sage.
Of course, you can buy herbs to cook with at the
supermarket, also.

Here are some simple recipes to get you started
using herbs in your cooking.

Lemon Chive Dressing

1 clove garlic
dash of salt
Rind of 1 lemon, finely grated
and the juice
1 1/2 teaspoons mustard
4 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons chopped chives

Put the garlic and salt in a bowl and crush together.
Add lemon rind, juice and mustard, stirring until
smooth. Slowly whisk in the oil. Fold in chives
and season with black pepper, if desired.

This is a good dressing to pour over warm, cooked new
potatoes. Add finely chopped green onions.

Mint Iced Tea

Wash 8 sprigs of fresh mint, 12 inches long (any mint,
spearmint, peppermint, applemint will do). Place in
blender with 4 cups water and liquefy. Let it set for
about 1/2 hour and strain.

Herb Butter

1/2 cup butter
4 tablespoons fresh herbs or 2 teaspoons of dried herbs

Soften the butter to room temperature. Finely chop the
fresh herbs. Blend herbs and butter well. Store in
fridge.

Use to season vegetables, as a spread on bread, biscuits
or baked potatoes. Anywhere you normally use butter.

Here’s something different: not really cooking, but a
recipe that you might find fun!
Basil-Lemon Facial Mask

Pulverize a handful of fresh basil leaves. Peel 1/2 of
an avocado and mash. Add avocado to basil in blender,
along with 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 1 teaspoon honey.
Mix until smooth.

Apply to clean face and leave as long as desired. Rinse
off with lukewarm water.

In short, you don’t have to be an herb specialist to
learn to enjoy using herbs.

From One Cup Coffee Makers to “Smart” Refrigerators: Kitchen

Posted by admin in Eatery

The modern kitchen would not be complete without a refrigerator, an oven, a microwave, and a coffee maker. As fixtures in one of the most important rooms in the house, these appliances are on the forefront of the battle for greater convenience and lower energy costs. Here is a look at a few of the technological makeovers which can help you save both time and money.

“Smart” Refrigerators

Has this ever happened to you? On your way home from work, you stop at the supermarket for groceries. While picking up food for dinner, you can’t remember whether there’s a steak in the freezer or if you still have enough butter for the mashed potatoes. Instead of placing a call to your significant other, let your refrigerator check the inventory for you.

Using a cell phone, it is possible to remotely access an up-to-the-minute list of the contents of the “smart” refrigerator via an Internet connection. LG Electronic’s Internet Refrigerator is capable of alerting its user when a product has expired. The potential for this technology is enormous, but the limited availability of online grocery services has slowed its spread. Manufacturers hope to eventually develop a system by which refrigerators will not just keep tabs on the food inside, but will make lists of what is needed and automatically place an order with online grocers.

One drawback of the current technology is the effort that goes into keeping your refrigerator’s records up-to-date. As the refrigerator is stocked, the product names and expiration dates must be logged manually. When an item is removed from the refrigerator, the data must be entered as well. The convenience of knowing what’s in your refrigerator at any time may be outweighed by the inconvenience of keeping such meticulous records.

Another popular focus for the newly-developed technology involves reducing energy costs. For instance, the Fisher & Paykell Active Smart Refrigerator offers multiple energy-conserving features which, when combined, contribute to the overall efficiency of the product. The Active Smart electronic intelligence and multiple sensors monitor the internal temperature while a Variable Capacity Compressor ensures the refrigerator runs at its peak.

Energy-efficiency is particularly important when it comes to refrigerators because they are the only kitchen appliances that run 24-hours per day. By purchasing ecologically-friendly technology you’ll reduce your electricity bills and keep more money in your wallet.

Convenient Coffee Makers

A recent development in coffee consumption is the vacuum brewing system, as highlighted by the Clear Electric Santos coffee maker by Bodum. The machine promises to brew six to twelve cups of strong coffee within eight minutes using an easy-to-clean filtration system. This is an ideal appliance for people who love a full-bodied cup of joe.

The days of boiling whole pots of water just to have a single cup of coffee are over. The one cup coffee maker can brew your favorite gourmet tea or coffee in less than a minute, eliminating the need to prepare a whole pot. For people on-the-go, these fast brewing machines are a welcome addition to the home or workplace.

The single cup coffee maker is also a great energy saver. In the time it might take to heat up one pot of regular coffee or to drive over to Starbucks, a one cup coffee maker by Keurig can brew several differently flavored hot drinks in 40 seconds each. Another perk of this machine is the variety of drinks it can produce. Keurig provides customers with over 70 different coffee or tea “K-Cups” from which to choose. K-Cups are easy-to-insert dispensers, which fit neatly into the coffee company’s machine with little effort and no clean-up.

Multifunctional Ovens

Forget slaving over a hot stove for hours just to get dinner on the table. Thanks to new ovens with automatic time and temperature controls dinner can practically make itself. Want a meal to be ready by the time you get home? Simply place your favorite dish in the oven and let the appliance do the rest.

The Intelligent Oven by TMIO refrigerates food until the user activates the cooking function. The oven’s Internet connectivity allows you to control this feature remotely with your cell phone or computer. Meals are not only delicious, but perfectly timed for your convenience. Additional advances have made the product safer and more energy-efficient, making it both user- and environmentally-friendly.

For real fast food, look for appliances such as the Sharp High Speed Convection/Microwave Oven. A 5-pound roasted chicken would take up to 140 minutes or more in a standard oven but, with the new high-speed ovens, the same meal can be ready within 28 minutes. By using a mix of super-heated circulating air and microwave energy, meals cook up to 80 percent faster.

In a step that brings to mind scenes from a work of science-fiction, General Electric is among the companies developing ovens which respond to voice commands and recognize over 200 regional accents. Rather than pushing a pre-set button, key phrases would activate the already programmed cooking times and temperatures. Such technology may not be a long way off, but its price tag may prove to be beyond the reach of many consumers.

High-tech Microwaves

Trying to find quick and easy recipes? Put down the cookbook. You can easily download hundreds of recipes directly from your microwave with the push of a button.

Using the LG Lifestyle MG-5682NL microwave oven, you can download recipes or other cooking information from the company’s web site. Sharp also sells a microwave that downloads cooking instructions for various meals, then automatically programs the time and power settings required to zap your meal to perfection.
In a slight variation on the theme, a new microwave by Samsung is programmed to read cooking directions by scanning product bar codes with a special sensor. The microwave then pulls the specific cooking instructions off the Internet and cooks the meal accordingly.
Many models now come with cooking pre-sets for popular food items, such as popcorn or frozen meals. Simply press one of the clearly-labeled option buttons on the microwave’s touchpad and the appliance will automatically adjust the time and power level.
Another feature that you won’t want your microwave to be without is a moisture sensor. Microwaves heat food by using radio waves to excite the molecules. To prevent overcooking your food, the moisture sensor will calculate how much time is still needed to cook based on how long it took for the food to begin steaming.

Since the kitchen is a natural hub of activity for any household, a few small changes can mean big savings in more ways than one. These kitchen innovations will not only free up more of your time, but can help you save money on the monthly energy bills. A little efficiency can go a long way!

Durom Cup Hip Lawsuits Not Superb for Hip Replacement Patients

Numerous implant recipients who experienced dorum hip used in their hip cup replacement surgeries are encountering that there are complications that far surpass the normal expectations for recovery. These poor people are experiencing a lot of unneeded pain for lengthier time periods, needing a revision surgical processes and increased medical costs, and losing revenue by not being able to work at their official jobs. Although Zimmer Holdings, Inc. is claiming that that their hip replacement implant is not defective and have basically denied blame for the surgical failures, some poor people are filing lawsuits against them and accepting settlements.

Sometime during October, 2008 Zimmer announced that it had reserved $47.5 million to compensate for claims that had been filed against them. Many MD’s are not positive that the implant is is not the issue like the company has stated. In fact, when Zimmer offered on-line coaching to physicians in order to teach them what they said were more accurate techniques for doing the implant surgery, roughly 1/2 of the physicians refused to participate. Hence, the whole situation remains to be irritating for all parties attached, but none more than the hundreds of poor people who are needing a revision surgery because of the issues with their implant experiencing failures.

These hurt unfortunate people definitely merit some aid and restitution which obviously is why product liability attorneys are suggesting and telling them to initiate lawsuits. revision hip replacement has been paying out of court for some of these claims. Even So, even if the payoff they are being offered seems like a fair amount, in many cases poor people are settling too fast and without allowance being made for repeat problems if they happen down the road. Without waiting to find out what an actual case is worth, individuals may find themselves ending up paying alot more money from their own personal assets when more medical issues exist or surface.

Anyone who believes they probably have a claim against Zimmer needs to start checking into it. If you imagine you could qualify, you should probably call a attorney to verify this info. Look for a firm that covers across the country and specializes in litigation against flawed medical devices. This law firm has gone so far as to setup a special section to uncover the details and handle the claims against Zimmer and win substantial settlements for their customers.

If your orthopedic surgeon lets you know that you require a revision operation to repair your Zimmer Durom hip replacement device, get in touch with an lawyer immediately.

Choosing a Hypnotherapist

Posted by admin in Eatery

This article assumes that you have decided to go for hypnotherapy to resolve some issue such as giving up smoking or losing weight, and seeks to answer the question, “How do you select an appropriate hypnotherapist?”

You should check with prospective hypnotherapists that they belong to a reputable professional body with a code of conduct and a complaints procedure.

Unfortunately, there is a bewildering array of professional bodies and qualifications for hypnotherapy. In recognition of this, the government set up the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC). This body has specified minimum qualifications, and has a code of conduct and a complaints procedure. If you are thinking of seeing a hypnotherapist, make sure that they have GHSC accreditation as a minimum: the letters ‘GHR’ will appear on the literature of a registered practitioner and ‘GHSC’ for a validated practitioner.

Having said all that, word of mouth is probably the most effective way of selecting a hypnotherapist, as long as it is someone that a friend of yours has seen, rather than someone that you have heard of in the media.

Beware of the hypnotherapist with the one-size-fits-all approach; rather, look for someone that treats you as an individual, with warmth and respect.

Qualifications and experience are important aspects to consider. However, the crucial factor is the quality of the relationship you have with your hypnotherapist; improvement is much more likely to take place if the therapeutic relationship is right.

In order for hypnotherapy to work, you need an approachable hypnotherapist that will hear what you have to say, identify with your concerns, provide insights, tools and techniques to help you move forward, and keep you safe from harm.

Of course, you can’t tell whether you will have a good therapeutic relationship until you actually meet your hypnotherapist…

The Initial Appointment
The first appointment is an opportunity for you and the hypnotherapist to get to know enough about each other so that you both can make an initial feasibility assessment. The hypnotherapist needs to decide whether they have the skills to deal with the issues you are presenting, and you need to make a decision about the quality of the therapeutic relationship.

This doesn’t mean that the hypnotherapist is not working hard - sometimes one session is all that is required for fundamental improvements to happen, and, with all this in mind, the hypnotherapist will often charge you for the initial appointment.

Hypnotherapists should be open and trustworthy. They should be able to put you at your ease within minutes of meeting them. The hypnotherapist should be the sort of person to whom you might be prepared to confide anything. You should find the hypnotherapist easy to talk to, even if you are a person of few words.

By the end of the initial appointment, you should know:

how much the hypnotherapist charges
a little about how hypnotherapy works
what to expect when you are hypnotised
the duration of the sessions
if more than one session is planned, how many sessions will be required, how frequently you will meet and when reviews will take place.

Making a Decision
You are now in an excellent position to make a decision about the hypnotherapist, and I suggest that you consider the following questions. The list might seem a little daunting at first sight, but don’t be put off - seeing a hypnotherapist can allow you to make fundamental and far-reaching changes to your life in a short space of time:

First and foremost, did the hypnotherapist make you feel comfortable? Did you find it easy to talk to him/her?
If not, it’s not going to work out and you should look elsewhere.

Was the hypnotherapist open about what was going to happen and how long it would take?
If the hypnotherapist is not involving you in decisions, how do you know that they are appropriate?

If the hypnotherapist responded to what you had to say, did it make sense?
Any remarks the hypnotherapist makes in response to significant things you have said should help you clarify your thoughts.

Did the hypnotherapist understand where you were coming from? Did you feel any pressure to fit in with the hypnotherapist’s map of the world?
If the hypnotherapist can’t meet you in your map of the world, she/he isn’t going to be able to help you.

Did the hypnotherapist talk over you, talk when you were trying to think, talk about themselves, or try to get you to agree with them.
You are only going to be able to move forward if the focus is on you rather than on the hypnotherapist.

To summarise, make sure that the hypnotherapist is qualified and experienced, and belongs to a professional body with a code of conduct and a complaints procedure. The quality of the therapeutic relationship is paramount, and a little extra effort shopping around for the right hypnotherapist will pay dividends in the long term.

Happy hunting!

The Impact Of Patents On Everyday Life

Posted by admin in Legal Management

If you buy or sell on eBay, or are a BlackBerry user, the odds are that you are aware of the potential impact of patent law on your day to day living. The lawsuit of MercExchange against eBay has the potential to disrupt about a third of eBay’s business if a permanent injunction were granted. The threat of such an injunction against it caused the Canadian company RIM to settle with NTP for $612.5 million in order to keep its BlackBerry buiness going.

By June of 2005, there was legislation introduced in the US House of Representatives to reform some of the perceived difficulties. For example, Lamar Smith introduced H.R. 2795. Because powerful interest groups had divergent viewpoints on the injunction issue, the proposed legislation went no where.

The US Patent Office [USPTO] itself is proposing some changes to fix perceived problems. In January 2006, the USPTO presented proposed changes, and solicited comments, upon rules which would limit patent applicants to no more than one continuing application.

For all the talk about problems with the US patent system, and proposed solutions, certain topics are not being discussed. Since about 1991, the Patent Office has been run on fees it collects from users. HOWEVER, in that time period, Congress has been diverting some of the fees the USPTO collects to general revenue. In recent years the diversion has represented approximately ten percent of all the user fees paid to the PTO. [see for example Heath W. Hoglund, 83 JPTOS 725]. HR 2795 did not address fee diversion, and as such would have left the USPTO with its 10% yearly shortfall.

Similarly, the USPTO’s proposed change has nothing to do with the fee diversion. In fact, it proposes to limit the number of continuation applications that can be filed, so a result will be a decrease in the fees taken in by the USPTO.

But the USPTO is facing a desparate situation. With the strangulation from fee diversion, the backlog of unexamined applications has increased.

Limiting the number of continuation applications is supposed to address the problem. However, one may question whether this tactic is of sufficient scope to resolve the problem.

I had written in Intellectual Property Today in Nov. 2005, based on numbers I got from the PTO for FY2004:

About 7% of applications were “second” continuations.
As a result, the USPTO is evaluating the possibility
of limiting continuations. One notes that the
combination of RCEs/R129s/CPAs comprises 14% of the
applications, with true continuations under Rule 1.53
amounting to 8%. Divisionals comprise 5% and
continuations-in-part 4% of the applications. The
single most predominant form, a continued examination
of an application, comprises 45% (14/31) of these
examples of re-work.@ Dudas noted that the average
time spent on each case is 19.7 hours. Although some
of the re-work may arise from overreaching by patent
applicants, some may be caused by the insufficiency of
19.7 hours, on average, to allow examiner and
applicant to come to a meeting of the minds on proper
claim scope. Deciding what is new and non-obvious is
not an easy job, as a recent episode in the study of
Civil War history illustrates.

The number for FY 2005 is even smaller: 5.8 % (21,800/376,000).

Thus, even if the USPTO got its wish, there are not enough “second” continuations to outlaw that would impact the growing number of unexamined applications.

There is a further issue. Examination of a first or second continuation application is easier than examination of a previously unseen application. The examiner has read the case and understands a lot of what is going on. Issues have been joined. The March 2006 newsletter of the Patent Office Professional Organization [POPA] noted that examiners usually process such cases more quickly. Curiously, academics Lemley and Moore, in writing about ending abuse of continuations, denied this obvious inference, and suggested examiners would forget what they had learned in the two years that might pass between initial application and continuation. [One notes that Lemley himself did forget about the problems associated with the multiple continuations used in the Axel patent, when he praised the Axel patent in “Patenting Nanotechnology” in 2005, although the district court in the Axel case had (ironically) cited Lemley’s “Ending Abuse” for depicting the evils associated with the sort of thing Axel and Columbia University had done in keeping the patent alive.]

At the end of the day, interested observers of the patent system will need to keep their eye on the ball to identify what are, and are not, problems with the patent system. Reform is needed, but one needs to ensure that the reform will actually solve the real problems.

Lawrence B. Ebert is a registered patent attorney in central New Jersey. He maintains a blog at IPBiz.blogspot.com, and has a recent article on the Hwang scandal in embryonic stem cells published in 88 JPTOS 239. He has discussed issues in patent reform in the New Jersey Law Journal in an article published on July 18, 2005.

A Martial Artist’s View Of The Film: “Fight Club”

Posted by admin in Internet Martial Arts

“Fight Club” is the kind of film that can make you squirm, belly laugh, and think, “That’s profound!” in the space of a few minutes.

Starring Edward Norton and Brad Pitt, this is, on a superficial level, a flick about underground boxing, or if you prefer, brawling clubs.

No money changes hands, no betting occurs, and the pugilists’ only compensation is the thrill they get from kicking butts.

A cult develops that externalizes violence to the surrounding society, targeting various “establishment” symbols, such as TV and electronics stores, public officials, and office buildings.

Just when you think, “Now, they’ve gone too far,” the plot twists to make you question nearly everything you’ve seen to that point. The real and unreal start to unravel, and you wonder if you’ve been played for a chump.

Here are a few of the points that I draw from this movie that are of special interest to the martial artist:

(1) You can prevail if you decide to take a battle, a disagreement, or a cause to the extreme. Even certified tough guys, including the mobsters you see in the film, can be intimidated and will back down if they believe their adversaries are crazy enough to do anything.

(2) Men are seeking gender clarity and reaffirmation of their core instincts. The forced feminization of males during the past several decades has created role confusion and dissatisfaction among males as well as females. “Fighting,” however you construe this term, provides a forum for men to be tested and to learn who they are on a deep, primitive level.

(3) Men were not minted for the purpose of wearing neckties and performing nerdy roles inside of sterile office buildings. Our most natural inclination is to be hunters, not custodians.

(4) Women will tolerate a great deal from men who are in touch with their basic instincts, and they’ll relentlessly toy with or destroy those who aren’t.

(5) To borrow a phase from General Stonewall Jackson: “One courageous man makes a majority.”

You might like this movie simply because of its unpredictability.

I like it because its characters are onto something.

Take the exchange between Pitt and Norton on the plane, where Norton hands Pitt an obscure compliment that Pitt decodes on the spot, and then Pitt incisively asks:

“How’s that working out for you?”

“What?” Norton responds, puzzled.

“Cleverness. Is that working for you?”

With this brief exchange, Pitt implies, “You’re a wimp.”

Cleverness, indirection, and cute word play don’t make you a man, so cut the crap and don’t fool yourself.

Men, whether they realize it or not, are attracted to the martial arts partly because modern society provides few opportunities to be completely nonverbal, to escape the endless symbolism and etiquette that informs professional and personal lives.

With a fist headed toward your teeth, there’s no time to talk; only to act.

Tapping Into the Actor’s Full Potential

Posted by admin in Uncategorized

An old acting phenomenon is going by a new term these days. The Hidden Acting Agenda refers to an actor hiding a certain trait, condition or quality due to the fact that at least one of these things was a source of great turmoil at some point in their lives.

A hidden agenda works this way: a person has been told repeatedly since childhood that they get upset too easily. That person then decides to never let themselves cry or show upsetting emotions. This in turn becomes a major component in that person’s behavior. For an actor or actress, this means that they will never reveal the component which has caused them such previous torment. Making this subconscious choice guarantees that the character being portrayed by the actor will be less affecting and much weaker than if the actor or actress allowed themselves to cry and show that emotion.

These hidden agendas make it difficult, if not impossible, for actors to fully develop their talent. This is because a majority of their talent may be tightly interwoven with these perceived “undesirable” traits.

Uncovering these well-hidden, often erroneous, beliefs takes time. However, these roadblocks must be brought to the actor’s attention in order to get past them and open up their full acting potential.

The full height of an actor’s abilities will never be realized unless these hidden agendas are exposed and explored. Releasing these negative beliefs and behaviors results in opening up the creativity that has previously been untapped. This will very likely be a great part of the actor’s success. Otherwise, key talents may become dormant and remain unused.

An audience cannot be moved emotionally if the actor does not release these suppressed talents, neither can a casting director or anyone else. Suppressing these emotions only causes distress within the actors who are compelled to hide them. In order to keep these negative feelings in check, the actor will make the choice to avoid these faults and feelings in choosing which acting talents to display.

In reality, these perceived faults of wonderful actors are not imperfections at all, but rather are indistinguishable aspects of their personality, which are essential to their acting ability. Such an actor needs to let his adventurous side take over and defy the thought process that is dictating how he thinks a particular character should be portrayed.

Necessary acting components should always include characteristics the actor might rather hide or avoid. Avoiding their own negative emotions only weakens the characters they portray. Rich acting skills are always personal to the actor.

Characters become much deeper and richer when the actor connects with and develops what he may consider flaws in his own life. Those very things are what makes one actor so very different from another and gives the acting industry such a vast array of characters. Everyone has flaws and imperfections. Actors must allow these to be used by allowing one or more to be presented in their character portrayals. People are only impressed by what moves them. What moves people are the imperfections, which we all protect. When an audience experiences an actor revealing himself through his imperfections, then they are deeply moved.

Marvelous Audiobooks and the Perfect Way to Fit them into Daily Living

Posted by admin in Book Shop

An active life can make it tricky to read every book you want to. Long journey times to the office and day to day activities may consume huge amounts of leisure time without you realizing it.
