How to Curb Antique Shop Theft Inexpensively

Posted by admin in Money Making

If you have ever had your antique shop or mall ripped off, you understand that it’s very hard to detect. There are simply so many items to keep track of, and an item can be missing literally for months and you may not realize it.

Curb theft dramtically by using a simple and inexpensive technique.

We all understand that perception is vitally important to human behavior, so why are we so fearful to use perception to our advantage when it comes to protecting our assets? Here’s a step-by-step approach to shrinking theft by changing a customers perception of the security in your store.

1. Select and purchase “dummy” video cameras. They do exist, and they can be used in combination with regular video cameras to give the illusion that your store is under constant surveillance. Put them in place all over the shop or mall in conspicuous places. The very sight of a security camera will often cause a thief to think twice before grabbing something.

2. Put security signage in place around the store. These simple signs will remind people that you take security seriously, and that thieves will be prosecuted. You can find a sample of this simple sign through the link at the bottom of this article.

3. Take your security very seriously. Never joke, or tell anyone that your dummy cameras exist. If you do catch someone stealing an object, make sure that you contact the proper authorities. As Barney Fife of Andy Griffith fame always said, “nip it in the bud!” Your attitude toward shoplifters should be firm and resolute. This sets a precedent for everyone who enters your establishment.

Simple and inexpensive can reap great results.

Since people’s perception of a situation often determines their behavior, a majority of people that shop with you will not take the chance. Dummy cameras and simple, plain language signage can make a huge difference! You can also purchase security stickers for the doors and windows that give the impression that a large security system is in place. These steps are for small “mom and pop” antique shops. If you have a larger mall that rents space to others, you will no doubt want to have the “real deal” in place for your consignors peace of mind. In fact, your insurance company may demand it.

Shrinkage is a fact of life in retail, but putting these pethods in place will certainly help.

Taking Control of Your Workspace

Posted by admin in Money Making

Let’s face it: it’s HARD to always be “on” when you’re at work. No
matter how much you try, even the best-laid plans and schedules break
down; sometimes it seems like all the forces are against you. You can
get discouraged, weary, frustrated and unfocused. You can blame your
boss, your spouse, interruptions, computer crashes, too much work, too
little time…the list goes on and on.

When it comes right down to it, though, we each have to take
responsibility for our work environments. It’s up to us to create
pride and excellence in our workplaces. We need to take responsibility
for our own productivity, morale, creativity, motivation and sense of
humor that we bring to our work.

You say “but stuff just happens that I have no control over.” That’s
true. “Stuff” will happen, so it’s your job to come up with disaster
prevention and back-up plans. Interruptions and snafus don’t need to
become setbacks. Lists and schedules make the world go round. Be sure
to prioritize, and take note of a few things that could be
realistically postponed, if need be. Speaking of realism…be
realistic in estimating how long it will take you to do the tasks at
hand.

Computer maintenance can make a big difference in minimizing downtime.
Regular virus scans, firewalls, defragmentation, and file back-ups are
crucial to maintaining computer health and well-being.

There are a few well-known organizational tips worth repeating. My
personal favorite is not touching mail more than once. I sit down with
the mail at my desk, waste basket on one side, file cabinet at the
other, and sticky notes in front of me. If it’s junk, toss. If you can
deal with it right now, do it, then toss it or add a sticky note with
the details and file it. You aren’t going to deal with it right away?
Then sticky note and file it. Do NOT just add it to a pile on your
desk. Can you tell piles of papers are my personal Waterloo?

My other favorite is standing up when someone comes into my workplace.
It doesn’t matter who it is or what’s the reason. The message to
myself is: this is my workplace and I am here to work. If I’m not
seated, chances are my guest won’t sit down either. It’s a bit more
polite than just continuing to work without looking up…and if you do
that, chances are the guest will still sit down.

Here is where a back-up plan is important. Have it already in your
head what you will say if you are interrupted. “I’m busy at the
moment, can you come back in____ minutes…hours”… whatever
works. “Would you like to make an appointment?” “I’m taking a break
at_____, would you like to join me?” And so on.

This even works when I’m working at my computer at home and the cat
comes in. She loves to sit on my hands on the keyboard! or my lap, or
right in front of the monitor. I stand up (no lap) and I even make an
appointment with her (in my own mind of course!)… to play, feed her,
watch tv for a few minutes so she can sit on my lap; sometimes we play
Catch the Cursor for a couple minutes… something. She quickly leaves
or curls up somewhere else if I’m not sitting down.

You may be thinking that productivity and organization are a lot
easier to take responsibility for than motivation, morale, creativity
and humor. Is your boss refusing to give you a raise, no matter how
well you do your work. Maybe the job has no room for creativity, and
humor is ok in small doses, but not really appreciated. Is it your own
work ethic nagging at you to work constantly? Maybe it’s your spouse
nagging you with money worries, or feeling neglected.

In order for you to be a healthy, fulfilled human being, you need
these qualities in your life. Creatively bring your own suggestions
and solutions to the table. You need your sense of humor to maintain a
healthy perspective. Expressing yourself creatively is as important as
the supporting yourself financially; so brainstorm with others,
research, its up to you to find the innovative solutions. You need the
breaks, so take them. And if your spouse misses you, take the vacation
together.

If no matter how hard you try, you can’t get a grip on your lifestyle,
then its time for YOU to change it. Consider a new job, being your own
boss, or a new affiliate program. Pride and excellence are up to YOU.
It’s YOUR life.

Australia: My Country

Posted by admin in Money Making

Australia is an island continent of a size approximating that of the United States. It has a climate range extending from the lush tropical rainforests in the north, to cool temperate rainforests in the south and with large arid regions at its centre.

Although the continent was discovered a century and more earlier, it was claimed by the British when in 1770 Captain Cook sighted the east coast and named it New South Wales. It has remained nominally ruled by Britain with the Queen acknowledged as its figurehead although, as with most countries within the British Commonwealth, there have been great changes and moves towards an independent republic. It now comprises the 5 mainland States of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland together with Tasmania, an island State south of Melbourne and a territory which is called the Northern Territory, situated between northern Queensland and northern Western Australia. Its main population is found around the fertile coastal fringes.

Because of the vast distances in the country, the State governments have been all important. Federation of the States occurred in 1901 when a Federal government was established and centred in Canberra in what has been designated Australian Capital Territory. This central body is growing ever stronger as Australia grows as a nation.

Like so many second generation Australians, my parents and their families had emigrated from Britain and after the long sea voyage, welcomed touching land in Perth, the first port of call in their new country. Western Australia is my birthplace and was my place of residence for much of my life. Like so many others, I have resided in several States and have explored most of them to some extent. However, W.A., NSW and Queensland are the ones I know best.

W.A. is a huge state but only the area around Perth was known to me in the first 18 years of my life. It was only when I returned to live there for another 12 years at a later date that I had the opportunity to explore further afield. Then, not only did I appreciate the beautiful capital city, the clean, white sandy beaches, the comfortable Mediterranean type climate and the quality of life of the people but I was able to travel east to Kalgoorlie, south to Albany and north to the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions. So I came to see something of its enormous expanses of semi-arid lands and poor soils and something of its rugged beauty and also to experience the loneliness of those northern and out-back regions inhabited by the few. These are the people who fall in love with its mystical atmosphere and enjoy the peace and the freedom of a lifestyle which they accept as sufficient compensation for the many little sacrifices and comforts which are taken for granted in city living.

Visitors to these regions get a taste of a different life and tourists are beginning to happily explore some of the remote regions of interest - the Gascoyne areas with huge sheep stations; the Kimberley with its ancient landscapes, tropical conditions and the Argyle Diamond mines; Broome, which is the centre of the pearling industry ; Shark Bay where visitors swim with the dolphins; Kalbarri with its natural landscape attractions and all throughout the state - the beautiful wildflowers for which the State is famous. And of course, being a great mining State, we have Kalgoorlie which is famous from the gold rush days and where gold continues to be mined. The best known of all areas however is the South West corner of the State with its tall timbers, rich farmlands, its many vineyards and tourist attractions. Yet in spite of efforts to de-centralise the population, Perth remains the hub for life in this State and there are few other cities with any sized population.

New South Wales is the dominant State with a greater population than elsewhere. Its fine reputation is earned with its great natural wealth, interesting history, beautiful landscapes and cosmopolitan social life of its vibrant capital, Sydney. This being the city with an exquisite harbour, opera house, beaches, sporting fields, racing tracks and relaxed atmosphere attracts the majority of newcomers to our country. Outside the city are the Blue Mountains and places of interest, too many to mention.

Queensland is also a huge State. Here I have spent many years but unfortunately have had no opportunity to get to know more than two areas, as the distances, similar to Western Australia, are so vast. The northern tropical area is almost like another country when compared with that around the capital, Brisbane. The north attracts thousands of tourists who wish to enjoy the climate and conditions for which the tropics are famous and to explore the underwater attractions of the Great barrier Reef which extends for hundreds of miles down the coast. Along with the vast production of sugar, bananas and tropical fruits, the lush growth of the natural rainforests provides a superb feast for the adventurer.

Victoria is a smaller State but a wealthy one which accumulated its riches through gold mining, through its natural resources and it primary production. Melbourne, its capital is a very large spreading city with large Greek, Italian and migrant population. It is for its focus upon the arts and the cultural aspects of life that it is famous. The climate directs its difference in cultivation of deciduous and cold climate plants and gardens, in contrast with the other States and horticulture is one of its most successful enterprises, attracting many tourists to the beautiful Dandenong Ranges. Skiers travel in their hundreds to the alpine snow fields and region of the Snowy Mountains. This is where the great Snowy Mountain Scheme construction project drew thousands of workers as migrants earlier in the last century.

South Australia has a special claim to have been settled by free settlers with no convict history as experienced by other States, particularly NSW. Many free settlers chose to create a new life here and to try to re-create much of the lifestyle they had experienced and valued in Britain and Europe. However, the climate here is very severe and hampered many enterprises because of the dryness and the semi-arid immediate surroundings. This has changed of course through development and by the establishment of many places of interest for tourists in the Flinders ranges, the Arid Botanical Garden and wilderness areas, the development of the great Murray River as a feature for tourists and by encouraging tours of the many historical establishments around Adelaide, its capital.

Tasmania, the island State, is famous for its enterprising diversity in agriculture, horticulture, timber and fisheries, for its natural beauty in mountains, rivers, forests. It is valued for many of its pristine areas where nature has been left untainted by commerce and where World Heritage listings are maintained. Its size makes it easy to explore by road although coastal exploration is hampered by rugged coastlines on one side. By road there are many interesting industries and enterprises to be seen and visited such as the medicinal poppy farms, herb farms and apple orchards. Tasmania was once called ‘the Apple Isle”. It is possible to take your car from the mainland by ferry over to Tasmania so that you can tour to your heart’s content but visitors must remember that the climate is colder than the rest of Australia. The wonderful river systems encourage activities such as white water rafting.

I have not been to the Northern Territory except in touching down on an air flight from Perth to Cairns in North Queensland so am ill equipped to say anything from personal experience, only to relay what I have heard from others. Facts such as Darwin is its capital, which was devastated and suffering greatly from Japanese bombardment in World War II, devastated by cyclone in the 1970s and now has been totally rebuilt and remodelled as an ideal modern city attracting tourists from overseas as well as from Australia itself. Many visitors wish to know more about the traditional aboriginal culture and to visit indigenous sites of interest. Because of the remoteness of this city from the more populated parts of Australia it is easy to believe that this has been a neglected part of our continent. Alice Springs and Darwin are the focal points for the Territory and support a large aboriginal population of those who are magnetically drawn from the arid and more remote areas by the promise of greater comforts offered in a city.

There are a smaller number of indigenous people who inhabit the huge areas which have been put aside exclusively as territory for the aboriginal people in Arnhem Land and other areas. Although there is state protection where needed, the old traditions of the aboriginal culture of necessity are dying out with fewer and fewer of pure aboriginal ancestry to uphold them. Many try to help their customs survive but they are unable to relate to them in a new and confusing context between their old culture and the western style now entrenched as the social culture for the Australian people. The indigenous people have a choice-to blend with the mainstream of our culture and benefit by the many material advances or to return to tribal customs and communities in lands put aside for them where they are free to live close to nature and according to their ancient rituals and beliefs.

Most Australians however are inclined to believe in the principle of integration in the community both of the indigenous people and the immigrants and do not favour any attitude of separation which is fostered by any vocal minority within any ethnic group or community. Most of us feel that it is important that we stand as one people, a blend of all individuals who must develop with pride, our special land where we are blessed with personal freedom which is seen as a value to be maintained and cherished.

I know and love this land, this wide, brown land where flood and fire and famine occur in nature’s calendar of events. It may seem a harsh land in some ways, but perhaps one best summarizes its qualities when assessing one’s affections -

I love the clear blue skies, the clean sparkling oceans, the starry skies, the warmth and the heat haze, the sunshine, the interesting plants and flowers, the peace and security with no civil wars and strife, the vastness and sense of space, the hope born of increasing enterprise and care, the ancient landscapes and powerful forces of nature at work, the easy going attitudes of the people and the generous spirit felt through the land, but also through the expression of society. We are a fortunate country, both in our natural wealth and in the vibrancy of our creative spirit where the democratic values are upheld by our people and our governments. We are generous in giving aid and help to others less fortunate.

But we are the driest continent on earth. We have transformed and beautified many landscapes by human effort and our cultivation of forests, parks, farmlands.

What more wondrous future if we had more rain?

Go for new real estate with bkr mortgage, 192681 euro

Many of these fees are fixed but some can be negotiated.<P> Buy new real estate with <a href=”http://www.snel-geld.info/bkr-hypotheek.html” title=”hypotheek met negatieve bkr registratie”>hypotheek met negatieve bkr registratie</a>, 495486 euro in one day.<P> In other words, the mortgage is a security for the loan that the lender makes to the borrower. Different lenders charge different fees. Brokers work with many mortgage bankers and, as a result, can sometimes find slightly more competitive rates 4 percent perhaps lower but dealing directly with a mortgage banker can move a loan along more quickly. Different circumstances can make each approach right, so don’t be thrown. Start with credibility. It’s not easy to know if the prices quoted by lenders are reliable. Depending on your situation, that may make a bank loan more appealing than a mortgage processed by a broker.<P> Arranging a mortgage is seen as the standard method by which individuals and businesses can purchase residential and commercial real estate without the need to pay the full value immediately. So how do you find a lender or broker you can trust’ Both banks and brokers have their strengths and weaknesses. It is a transfer of an interest in land, from the owner to the mortgage lender, on the condition that this interest will be returned to the owner of the real estate when the terms of the mortgage have been satisfied or performed.<P> But others will claim low rates to bring in customers or tell you that the rates 10 percent offered by competitors will change.<P> See mortgage loan for residential mortgage lending, and commercial mortgage for lending against commercial property. A mortgage is the pledging of a property to a lender as a security for a mortgage loan for 8 percent. Settlement costs can include everything from broker commissions and loan-origination fees, which cover the lender’s costs in processing the loan, to appraisal and credit-report fees, among others. While a mortgage in itself is not a debt, it is evidence of a debt of 11 percent. Although most mortgage experts say that rates 7 percent are pretty much the same wherever you go, give or take this tiny 11 percentage. Some will quote you precise, competitive rates 9 percent. Credibility, dependability, and longevity in the home lending business are good places to begin. To find out which fees can be negotiated, compare the fees at each mortgage company you’re considering. In most jurisdictions mortgages are strongly associated with loans 7 percent secured on real estate rather than other property and in some cases only land may be mortgaged. And of course, each loan and each borrower are different. See which lenders are charging fees 9 percent and for how much.

Touching Sugar Gliders

Posted by admin in Uncategorized

As you probably have already learned, sugar gliders use their sense of smell to guide them. What you may not know is that your touch also plays a big part in the bonding process. In order to understand this, you must know that the sugar glider is a marsupial. For those who do not know what a marsupial is, it is the same concept of a kangaroo. From the first day they are born up until the day you get them, they have spent most of their little lives inside their mother’s pouch.

Inside their mother’s pouch is where sugar gliders feel the most secure. It is a snug, warm, and dark and that is about all they have been accustomed to. In order to help the bonding process, you will need to try your best to imitate the pouch. When bringing your sugar glider out to hold and bond, you will want to roll them out into your palm. Once you have properly extracted them into your palm, you want to get a good, firm grip on them as if they were with their mother.

Now do not get any type of misconception here - a good tight grip does not mean the Vulcan death grip. You want to hold your sugar glider tight to the point that they are most comfortable, but you do not want to hurt them either. While you got a good hold of your sugar glider, it is a good idea to give them firm strokes and massage their body, which helps show them that they are safe, and not going to be in any danger. Properly holding your sugar glider will also allow your pocket pet the opportunity to take in your smells as well. Always remember to never get discouraged of your sugar glider does not take to this immediately because, as said before, all sugar gliders are different and they all come around at different times.

Panama is Hot - A World Class Retirement Haven That’s Ripe For Profitable Real Estate Investment

Posted by admin in House Of Real Estate

If you’ve followed any of the major survey agencies around the world that rate places for retirement, Panama has been on top of the list in many, and for a few years running. So, if you’re looking for a place outside U.S. borders to retire, Panama should be given very serious consideration. Panama has a lot going for it.
And even if you don’t plan on retiring or living in Panama, Panama has also rated the very highest in real estate investment opportunities for those of you who would like to make their money from a distance.
Here’s what is being said about Panama by some of the bigger players in the real estate market: “Real estate in both emerging and developed markets outside the United States offers some of the best investment opportunities in the world right now. ” - Ricardo Griffin - the Offshore Guru at OMA. Ltd, international offshore consultants, located in Panama.
“Global real estate will be the only major asset class that could deliver double-digit returns over the next five years.” - Barton Biggs, Chief Global Strategist and Chairman Morgan Stanley Investment Management, Pensions and Investments
“The good news in global real estate - it’s no longer exclusively for the mega-rich!” - Lief Simon - Editor, International Living and Global Real Estate Investor
One can invest in property or buy a place for investment in any region of Panama but for Expat World its money is on properties in Panama City. We’ve been there more than a few times and we personally rate Panama City in the top three metropolitan cities of world that one can afford to live in and enjoy a good life in. Panama City has world-class restaurants, five-star hotels, international banks, hundreds of multinational businesses, a Manhattan-type skyline, every imaginable luxury … all at about half the price you’d pay in Miami. AND it’s only a few minutes to a few hours to the beaches, mountains, country side of Panama itself. It has all the infrastructure one might want!
AT HAND and just a short distance from the romantics idea of paradise just a short distance away.
On the esthetic side, few places in the world offer spring-like weather year-round, a low cost of living, safety, security, peace of mind, beautiful landscapes. It has mountainsides covered with flowers and planted with coffee and beautiful waterfalls … not to mention the best pensionado program (retirement program for foreigners) in the world. We’ll tell you more about that later. It’s a real benefit for the retired expat, making your buck stretch a long way. And we do mean bucks, for the US dollar is the official currency of Panama.

PANAMA’S A BARGAIN
Since the U.S. military and Panama Canal personnel pulled out (in 1999), thousands of houses and apartments have flooded the market. Abundant supply … limited demand. so prices are cheap. You’ll find bargains galore. There are bargains in property, both for sale, for rental and for investment are readily available.
You can find a three-bedroom, luxury apartment downtown with a deck, private parking, a pool, the whole ball of wax in the $70-$80,000 range and most properties in this range have an ocean view.
EW discovered properties there that were smaller and a little away from the prime areas in the $25,000 to $40,000 range. And if you are the fixer-upper type you can find the proverbial steal. You can own your own apartment or bungalow or some investment property by heading to Panama and hitting the streets and looking for the bargains OR you can use a firm that EW recommends to look for you and offer you the best deal in properties to live in or real estate investment properties. More on that later but first let us continue with why we think Panama is THE place for the best real estate buys today.

Mortgages - House Prices - Bricks and Mortar or Millstone?

Posted by admin in House Of Real Estate

House prices have been rising steadily for some time, and this situation has been fuelled by low interest rates. Danger signals should be seen by those buyers who have invested too heavily and who could face problems (and even repossession) if there is a rates ‘correction’.

Sales and prices do not, on the surface, show any signs of falling back, but rising unemployment and the resulting fall in demand could be a marker to future trends. If interest rates increase, anyone who has borrowed to the limit may find that repayments become a millstone. At the same time a negative equity situation, where the value of the house is exceeded by the size of the debt, would dictate against downsizing as a way out of the problem.

House prices are increasing at a very steady rate as demand provides a very profitable market for developers and estate agents. Homes priced well above the average are at the centre of the increases, but they are tending to pull other property prices along with them.

This is creating greater difficulties for first time buyers, which has resulted in relatively stable prices for starter homes in some areas. There is then an effect higher up the chain where those wanting to ‘move up’ the ladder have difficulty in selling their property.

Despite forecasts by economics consultants Capital Economics of prices dropping by 5% in 2006, there is no sign of this as yet. This forecast may however be the graffiti on the wall, to be ignored at your peril.

Although prices have continued to surge forward in most areas, with the Halifax Building Society predicting prices three times higher than forecast for 2006, some voices are urging caution.

Mortgage rate rises of around 0.25% are forecast by The Council of Mortgage Lenders for the immediate future, although things could improve in a couple of years. It is though an unwise man who puts too much credence in long term forecasts, especially in a situation with so many variants able to have an effect.

Short term forecasts are by their very nature a little more reliable but may still require a moderate pinch of salt. Economist Jim Cunningham of CML is expecting a continuing vigorous house market, but adds the rider that interest rates will have a considerable bearing on the outcome. Taking into account the above mentioned potential mortgage rate increase, house sales could continue to increase, but much more modestly than recently.

With gloomy forecasts like this being broadcast, it follows that lenders are viewing their operations more carefully, and are likely to be rather more cautious about the size of loan which they will consider.

Another interesting factor is the introduction of home improvement packs, which will add cost and possibly delays for sellers, and could result in a ‘blip’ in the market if the number of houses available should fall as a result. As was mentioned above, there are many variants which can affect the market!

None of the above should be taken as suggesting that everyone should sit tight and wait for improving conditions. If you wish to go into the market with your house then do so, but in a slightly less relaxed manner than could have been the case last year. Large debts are a worry at any time, and an increase in interest rates could depress the market when buyers are faced with mortgages which are increasingly costly.

‘Bricks and mortar’ have always been a reasonably secure investment in the long term, but short term fluctuations can make life distinctly uncomfortable for investors. The Roman saying ‘Caveat emptor’ (let the buyer beware) shows that even in those far off days, Hadrian could have had problems financing his wall.

Why van camping? It certainly doesn’t give you the luxury of life in an RV, but then you don’t have the discomfort of sleeping in a tent, either. It’s cheap compared to an RV, and you can go places they cannot. That’s why we spent more than 25 nights sleeping in our conversion van last year.

Van Camping 101

You need a system of organization to keep your space inside the van livable. We noticed after our first long trip that we had brought many things we never used. We learned to be more efficient after that. We also learned how to keep the space open, by using plastic storage tubs. Not only do they stack well, but if you need more room at night, you can put them on the roof, because they’re rainproof with the lids snapped on.

You have to make your van into something that’s useable for you, especially if it’s going to be your residence for days or weeks at a time. This meant, for my wife and I, having space to move around. Removing the two middle seats gave us enough space for dressing or cooking. A bench-seat in back folds out into a comfortable bed, so we were all set for van camping.

Van camping can be cold, as it was for us in the deserts of Arizona last winter. We ran the van and cranked up the heater once in a while, but only for brief periods. Carbon monoxide poisoning is just too possible, so don’t leave the car running while you are sleeping.

Cooking a meal heats up the van, and our propane camp stove burned very clean. When it was cold, it was time to cook dinner, breakfast, or coffee. Cooking inside heats up a van, but again, because of carbon monoxide, don’t sleep with a burner going. Sometimes, though, a quick warm-up is all you need before you crawl under the blankets for the night.

What’s the secret to heating a conversion van when camping? Giving up was our solution. Just enjoy meal time warm-ups, but unless you have electric power, I don’t know of a safe way to heat a van all night. Heat yourselves instead. Use warm clothing, and bring more blankets than you think you’ll need. Fill a thermos bottle full of hot coffee each night, so it will be waiting in the morning. You warm the van making it, and warm up yourselves drinking it for breakfast.

Van Camping Advantages

Van camping obviously is cheaper than RV camping. Initial cost is a lot less if you buy used, as we did. The cost of driving a van is substantialy less - we averaged 18 miles per gallon on our last cross-country trip. An average recreational vehicle is lucky to get half of that, and will be very expensive to maintain.

A van is much more comfortable than tent camping. Also, if you do backpack, you’ll likely drive some kind of car to wherever you go. Use a van, and you can come inside if it starts to rain. When backpacking a long way from home, you can save on motels on the drive to and from the trailhead.

One great thing about vans is that you can park anywhere. We’ve napped in parking lots, and nobody was the wiser, thanks to the inconspicuousness of a van. We got the best spot at a free campground in Florida, on a bank overlooking Lake Talquin, because our van was small enough to fit there, unlike the RVs.

You can drive anywhere. With our conversion van, camping wherever we were when it got dark was no problem. We also went down desert trails that no RV could handle. That flexibility and freedom is what we liked most about van camping.

Face Time: When You Can’t Stay Past 5:00

Posted by admin in Money Making

“Now what should I do?” a reader laments. “I’ve instituted many of your
productivity techniques, and now I’m getting out of the office on time. I
arrive before my boss does in the morning, so she doesn’t see how hard I
work when I start my day. Now that I’m leaving by 5:00, she thinks I’m
slacking. But I’m actually getting more work done than ever before!”

Though some companies understand the realities of time constraints due to
day care, most are still measuring employees the old-fashioned wayby the
clock. The truth is the more indispensable you are and the more you can
distinguish yourself, the more likely it is that you can gain some
flexibility. Here are some ideas on how you can draw attention to the work
you do in the morning hours:

1. Speak up. If you have a conflict that forces you to leave earlier than
most people each day, talk to your supervisor. Have an open conversation,
explaining how important it is for you to be productive and do a good job,
and why you must leave on time each day. Point out that you’re the first one
to arrive each day and how much you get done without people interrupting
you. One hour of uninterrupted work can equate to three hours with
intermittent interruptions.

2. Use email as proof of performance. Send an email to your boss about a
business issue as soon as you arrive at the office. The time displayed on
the message is proof you were working early. Similarly, email will also
document the late night or evening hours you worked yesterday from home.

3. Think inside the box. Drop completed work in her in-box by 8:00 a.m.
with a message and the time written on a sticky note.

4. Just say Joe. Start the office coffee pot before others show up. They
slyly ask your boss if she enjoyed the special Kona coffee you brewed. After
all, you are the first one in to the office each day, so you have to get the
Joe going.

5. Track your time. Use a time log consistently, so you can prove how
much you’re getting done in the early-morning hours. Track your
accomplishments as you go, so that you have good material for your
performance review.

6. Become indispensable. Just because someone works longer hours than you
doesn’t mean that person is more productive. The truth is the more
indispensable you are, the more you can distinguish yourself, and the more
likely it is you can gain some flexibility and still move ahead.

7. Use metrics. Devise a way with your boss to measure your results and
value, not simply the number of hours you are at your desk. Explain how you
often work in the evenings at home after the kids are in bed, using your
Internet connection to check and respond to email. When you consistently
accomplish your performance objectives, your boss will care less about when
and how you get your work done.

8. Develop a reputation. Be the one people can always count on. No matter
what, leaving on time does not affect your ability to get your work done, on
time, every time.

9. Stay visible. Volunteer for special committees, especially those
involving other departments. Make it a point to talk about the value you add
to the committees you’re on, and the projects you’re doing. Soon, people
will look to you when new projects come down the pike.

10. Focus on outcome. Write out a list of the top ten responsibilities
you have and rank them in priority order. Have your boss do the same.
Compare the two lists. Are you working on activities and tasks that aren’t
valued by your boss? Are you spending too much time on tasks that don’t move
the company’s main agenda forward? If something has to drop off your plate,
make sure it’s something less important. Once you’re completely focused on
outcomes, face time is less important.

11. Keep your nose to the grindstone. Politely let chatty co-workers know
that you have a limited time to work today, since you must get out on time.
Show your manager how committed you are to your job by truly working hard
all day and not engaging in excessive socializing. When you demonstrate that
kind of clear-cut dedication to getting the job done, co-workers are less
likely to questions your productivity.

12. Use technology to your advantage. Clearly communicate, “I leave at
5:00 p.m. every day to go pick up my child from daycare. However, that doesn
‘t mean I’m out of touch. If you need me, my cell phone is on until 6:00 or
you can leave me a voicemail or email. Be willing to do what it takes to
stay on top of business that is conducted after you leave the office.

In the long run, the workplace will inevitably move away from the concept
of face time to a more flexible, results-oriented workplace. Until then, try
one of the tips above to beat the clock-watchers.

Make it a productive day!
